Let's imagine something for a minute, something that gives us an idea of what the future has in store and all the possibilities of where technology can take us. Think of a building that has the technology that makes it smart enough to close the windows when the weather outside is too hot or it's raining. Maybe there's a tower that grows and nurtures plants that are planted on its walls that will keep the air pure and clean. This isn't just some sci-fi thinking, it's not just a fantasy to imagine, it's something that is being worked on and slowly being integrated in Dubai. The city is taking a lot of initiatives to not just move towards a city that is futuristic, but instead, they are taking the lead to turn into the future that others follow and aim to become. The city is bringing together nature’s designs and integrating them into smart technology, using them to build towers and smart infrastructures that can adapt, respond, and help the environment they are being used for. This is the era of Bio-Digital technology that Dubai is heading towards.
So before we talk about what kind of initiatives and projects are being done and have been done, we should talk about what this term even means. So, the term “Bio” means life, and “digital” refers to technology. When you put them together, Bio-digital means that we take the natural design of nature and its creations and use technology to make buildings and appliances that can mimic these actions. An example of this is taking how a tree gives shade, then using technology, integrating things like sensors and computers to mimic these actions and use them to make the building of the building itself better. The end goal is to make buildings that can use less energy, save limited resources like water, and just make the city a greener and healthier place to live.

These are twin towers that have been built with an outer layer that was designed with panels that move. On the outside, these panels simply look like traditional Arabic lattice screens, known as mashrabiya, but each one is automated. The purpose of these panels is that they open up in the morning and evenings to let in as much natural light as possible, and then close during the hottest parts of the day or when it becomes darker outside. The end result of integrating this technology into the building is that it uses 50% less air conditioning. This is a real building that finished construction in 2012 and works like the living skin of the building, protecting it from the heat of the desert sun.
One of the most visited tourist attractions and a really educational building, one that promotes and shows all kinds of innovation, is this building that is well known by the ring shape it holds, covered outside in Arabic writing, which is actually its windows, but that's not what makes it special, the real magic is held inside the building itself. There are hundreds of sensors in the building, they are constantly checking the temperature, light, and humidity in the building, connected to a smart computer that uses this to then control aspects like lighting, air conditioning, and the usage of water. By integrating this technology, the building has successfully avoided over consumption of energy and uses it only when needed.
This community is located in Dubailand and its an entire community where the concept of Bio-digitial technology integration is being put into effect, rather than just a singular building, it's a great example of how entire areas can integrate smart technology to make a greener city. The technology that they use is basically that the houses all have solar panels and the community also grows its own produce in greenhouses, using recycled water for the gardens, so essentially it is helping in producing more clean energy that the amount of energy that they are using. The whole community is basically giving back more than its taking.

So what's the point of doing all this? Why is Dubai putting so much investment into this type of innovation and going above and beyond than any other city or even country? Well, the answer is pretty simple. Dubai is located in a hot scorching desert. Buildings need constant cooling, something that uses a lot of money and a lot of resources like energy and water. By integrating these smart designs, we use the natural mechanics that already exist in nature, making the city more abled and they can save money on electricity and water, there is a lot of reduction in pollution, and most importantly they are preparing for the future and climate change continues to become a bigger problem each day, they are one of the front liners in taking initiatives to contribute to it as little as possible.
