Dubai’s skyline is already legendary; it's what the country and the city are most well known for, but that doesn't mean that they're done. There are more mega-scale projects that are in the works and are in line to be set up to be stepping stones for the next leap towards the future of the city. Starting from the tall skyscrapers that reach the sky to the huge districts that are being built, these are 10 projects that are statements that represent the innovation of the city and are a testament to where Dubai is headed.
Following a similar development and the legacy it left behind is the next man-made island, one of the most ambitious revivals in the waterfront scene in Dubai. Palm Jebel Ali is coming back in full force. There was a time when this project was dormant and there was little talk surrounding it, but recently it's come back in full swing, expected to be fully completed by 2030. There is more than 110 km of coastline, and there are plenty of amenities like 80 hotels and resorts, and the plan is to be able to house more than 35,000 families. With all these promises set by the developer Nakheel, Palm Jebel Ali is on its way to soon becoming the largest coastal luxury destination in all of Dubai.
Previously called “Burj 2020”, it is the towering building that is now known as Uptown Dubai Tower 1, in the works and planned to be standing tall at about 711 meters, having around 115 floors, and on every floor are included retail, commercial, and hospitality in every floor, not just housing or business. The start date of this project was around the end of 202,6, and it is expected to be handed over and ready for use sometime between 2028 and 2030. This is going to be more than just a skyscraper; it's going to be the next icon, in the works of becoming a vertical city hub located in Jumeirah Lake Towers, another major addition to the architectural landscape of the tall, towering buildings in
Another great project that's being led by the famous developer Zaha Hadid is the Signature Towers, which are tall buildings that are basically a triple tower and mixed-use complex. This means that every tower has its own purpose, but they're all still close together, allowing easy access to each other. There are separate towers for retail, commercial, and residential areas, and the entire area will also have a podium with retail, a bridge for crossings for pedestrians across the Creek extension. This project is also set to be done by 2030. When you take a look at the design pedigree and the massive scale of this development, it's clear to tell that these towers will turn into one of the next big landmarks of the city in the Business Bay area.
When it comes to the tallest constructions and towers that are under development at the moment, Burj Aziz is another great project taking place right on Sheikh Zayed Road and is set to stretch tall, at around 724 meters and 33 floors. The program for its construction and outline has details of residential, hospitality, retail, and other amenities, expected to be finished by 2029. This new development is pushing the boundaries that the city set with its previous projects, challenging norms in all aspects, whether it's height or experience. Another place to find some of the best scenic views of Dubai and its skyline, a project of massive scale.
While this next project isn't exactly a building, it's still a mega-scale project that is playing a big hand in reshaping the future of the city and how people travel around the place. Especially when you take into account its skyline, real estate value, and the profile of the new luxury-scale neighborhoods that are under development. The Blue Line will stretch for 30 km and will bridge areas like Dubai Creek Harbour, Academic City, Int’l City, and many more key destinations with segments on both underground and elevated levels as well. And all of this is expected to be operational by 2029. These changes in infrastructure in transit areas make small, subtle changes, but these are impactful as well.
If we stay on the topic of mega-scale projects, one keyword used in almost every new development and project that's started and planned to be running by 2030 is the word ‘sustainability’. This is a goal of the city, and it's just as big as any development project. The solar park is planning its expansion to reach up to 5,000 MW by the end of the decade, making it thus far the largest single-site solar energy project all over the world.
Though this has nothing to do with changes in the skyline, at least when it comes to the towers themselves, the visual aspects and scaling will be visible in the form of emerging campuses and industrial districts, giving the energy profile of the city a complete makeover.
Some new developments and projects are being worked on that are more focused on aspects like ecology, leisure, and luxury, and how to bring them all together to provide an environment and lifestyle that blends together. An example of this is Dubai Reefs and Dubai Mangroves, both of which are projects that are being done on a massive scale, catering towards marine and ecological developments by bringing together elements like eco-tourism, conservation, residential, and research. All of these projects are ones that will have a huge impact on coastal real estate, views, and other lifestyle experiences. If you want a better idea of what to expect, imagine floating eco-lodges, reef habitats, mangrove forests, and other waterfront real estate built in harmony with nature.
Next on mega-scale projects that will change the skyline of the city is the Urban Tech District, a district that is completely futuristic and is being designed as a “living laboratory.” This project is one that is placing more emphasis and importance on technology, green innovation, business incubation, and smart city infrastructure. This district will stretch over 140,000 sq meters, and it will have offices that have shared resources, green buildings, and community housing. By combining tech and urban living, the Urban Tech District will be shown not only in the skyline but also it'll be shown in the operations of the building and how they interact with the environment.
The Loop is another bold concept that is being worked on by URB. It's a 93-kilometer climate-controlled urban highway and will also have a network for both walking and cycling, it's all going to be interconnected as well, joining together different residential neighborhoods, parks, and other facilities and amenities in the area, promoting a more wellness-focused lifestyle by giving easy access without the need for vehicles. This is all a part of the UAE’s plan to place more importance and effort towards redefining mobility and trying to offer a better quality of life. Even though The Loop may not exactly be a district or a residential development project, it's going to play a big hand in influencing the developments in the area, basically promoting high-density in certain areas. This will also help to take a step towards becoming a greener city.
Many sustainable developments and communities are being made, all in line with the Dubai Vision 2030, one of the projects that is probably the most well known as of now is Expo Valley, located near the Expo 2020 site and its being built with the inclusion of villas, townhouses, schools, healthcare and public amenities all in a short walks reach, to go green. Though this project may be on the smaller size in comparison to some of the other areas mentioned, they are mega in the living scale. By this, it means that there is a lot to expect when it comes to things like what type of lifestyle is being offered, what amenities to look forward to, and how it's going to revolutionize neighborhoods.
